There are two methods that can be used to measure your instrument for the correct sizes of pads. They are (1) Measuring the pads and (2) Measuring the pad cups. See the sections below to determine which method you will use.
1. PAD MEASUREMENT
Pads are always measured at the widest point of the pad.
Use a ruler with millimeter marks and measure the pad across the surface at the widest point. It's that simple.
Measuring in this manner is the easiest way to proceed. In doing this, you are assuming that the previous installer put the correct size of pad into the instrument.
2. MEASURING PAD CUPS
If you would prefer to measure the pad cup, you will need to measure to the
INSIDE of the pad cup except for the three small pads on your flute. Measure these three pads to the outer edge as these three should fit more like clarinet or piccolo pads.
SIZES
All measurements should be taken to the closest 1/2 millimeter measurement. Always round down if you are not sure.
If you are ready, you may go directly to
Order Flute Pads.
We will need measurement "A" from the diagram below for the 2 or three small pads on your flute and the measurement "C" for the larger pads:
