INSTALLING TENON JOINT CORK

The first step is to completely remove the old cork material and as much of the glue as you possibly can.   We use a razor knife to cut off the old cork and then use a solvent such as “Goof-Off” to remove as much of the residue of glue as we can.

You will then need to cut a piece of cork to the correct size.   Do this with a razor knife and be as precise as possible.

Next, run a bead of pad/cork cement around the joint.   Carefully put the cork on the joint and hold in place with rubber bands.

Allow to dry over night! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

Next, use fine sandpaper to sand down the cork until it fits “dry” with no cork grease 1/2 way into the joint.   Once you have the 1/2 way dry fit, put plenty of cork grease on the cork and work the pieces together. Take them apart and repeat putting on grease and working them together. This is almost always needed to get a correct fit.

We use the same glue that we use for pads which is a shellac based glue.  (We sell it for $8.00 per tube).

As for thickness.   You should probably start with 3/64” thick as that is the most common thickness.
